What are dental implants?

Dental implants replace your natural tooth roots with titanium screws. Your dentist inserts them into your empty tooth sockets, and they fuse with the bone underneath, providing a foundation for crowns, bridges, or implant-retained dentures.

Are there different types of dental implants?

The Drs. Boyd P.C. team offers several types of dental implants:

Traditional dental implants

During a traditional dental implant procedure, your dentist replaces each missing tooth with a dental implant. For example, if you’re missing three teeth, you receive three implants.

All-on-4® dental implants

The team recommends All-on-4 dental implants if you’re missing most or all of your natural teeth.

During an All-on-4 procedure, your dentist places two dental implants in your upper jaw and two in your lower jaw. These four implants support implant-retained dentures and restore your smile. 

All-on-6® dental implants

The team recommends All-on-6 dental implants if you’re missing most or all of your natural teeth and have low bone density. 

An All-on-6 procedure is similar to an All-on-4 procedure. The difference is your dentist places three implants in your upper jaw and three in your lower jaw. 

What does getting dental implants involve?

The process for getting dental implants varies, depending on the type you want.

Getting implants takes several months.

Your dentist numbs your mouth and uses guided imaging to place the implants into your empty tooth sockets. Afterward, it takes several months for the implants to fuse with your jawbone.

Once the integration process is complete, your dentist takes digital impressions of your mouth. They send your impressions to a dental lab that makes custom implant restorations, like crowns, bridges, or dentures.

When your implant restorations are ready, you return to the office, and your dentist attaches them to your implants.
