Bridges Q&A

What are dental bridges?

A dental bridge is an oral prosthetic that “bridges” a gap where a permanent tooth used to be.

Dental bridges have several parts: an artificial tooth that fills the empty tooth socket and crowns on adjacent teeth. Your Drs. Boyd P.C. dentist bonds the bridge in place, restoring your smile.

Are there different types of dental bridges?

Drs. Boyd P.C. uses several types of dental bridges, including:

Traditional dental bridges

This bridge has two crowns and one or more artificial teeth in between. Your provider recommends a traditional bridge if you have healthy teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

Cantilever dental bridges

A cantilever bridge is similar to a traditional bridge but only has a crown on one end. Your provider recommends this bridge if you have natural teeth on only one side of the gap in your smile.

Maryland dental bridges

Your provider recommends a Maryland bridge if you’re missing teeth at the front of your mouth. A Maryland bridge is held in place with a metal or ceramic framework that your dentist bonds to the back of the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile.

Implant-supported bridges

An implant-supported bridge attaches to a dental implant –– a small titanium post that replaces your natural tooth root.

What does getting a dental bridge involve?

Getting a dental bridge takes two visits several weeks apart.

At your first visit, your Drs. Boyd P.C. provider completes an oral exam and takes dental X-rays. This helps them determine the type of bridge that’s right for you.

Next, they prepare your teeth that will support the bridge and use an intraoral scanner to take digital impressions of your teeth and upper and lower dental arch. Your provider sends the impressions to a dental lab that creates a bridge using advanced ceramics.

When the lab finishes your custom bridge, you return to Drs. Boyd P.C. Your provider numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic, inserts the bridge into the gap in your smile, and applies dental cement to hold the bridge in place.
