Crowns Q&A

What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a cap made of porcelain over gold alloy, resin, or porcelain. It covers a damaged or decaying tooth or a dental implant.

Once placed, a crown restores your tooth’s shape, size, and appearance. It also prevents harmful bacteria from entering your tooth and restores your biting and chewing abilities.

Why would I need a dental crown?

The Drs. Boyd P.C. team uses dental crowns to:

  • Cover dental implants
  • Cover root canal-treated teeth
  • Cover severely stained and discolored teeth
  • Hold dental bridges in place
  • Strengthen weak teeth
  • Support cracked teeth

Sometimes, the team uses dental crowns to repair worn-down and broken teeth.

What does getting a dental crown involve?

Getting a dental crown takes two visits to Drs. Boyd P.C. several weeks apart.

At your first appointment, your dentist completes an oral exam, takes dental X-rays, and prepares your tooth for the crown. They administer a local anesthetic and remove your tooth’s damaged or decaying portion, ensuring a strong foundation for the new crown.

Next, your provider takes digital impressions of your tooth and covers it with a temporary crown. Afterward, they send your impressions to a dental lab that makes your crown from porcelain, resin, or porcelain over gold alloy.

When your crown is finished, you return to Drs. Boyd P.C. Your dentist numbs your mouth with a local anesthetic, replaces your temporary crown with the permanent one, and bonds it on top of your tooth with dental cement. Once the cement dries, your provider polishes your tooth and removes any excess material.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns usually last 10-15 years, but they can last even longer if you take good care of them. The Drs. Boyd P.C. team recommends brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing your teeth regularly, and visiting your dentist every six months for preventive maintenance.

To prevent damage to your crown, avoid extremely hard or crunchy foods, wear a mouthguard when playing sports, and avoid clenching your jaw and grinding your teeth.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

Dental crowns provide various benefits, including:

  • Improved chewing function
  • An enhanced smile
  • Protection from general wear-and-tear
  • Healthier teeth

They also repair tooth decay, preserving natural teeth and preventing the need for extractions.
